Congratulations! Whether this is your first child or an addition to your growing family, MD Family is here to help you establish a strong foundation of healthcare from the very beginning — and newborn visits are an essential part of that care.

Your first newborn visit at MD Family should take place 24-48 hours after being discharged from the hospital or birthing center. Simply call our dedicated newborn phone line to schedule your appointment and ask any questions.

Be sure to contact your insurance company and have your baby added to your health plan before the appointment as well.

Welcoming your new baby

Our team is ready and waiting to register your new baby and schedule a newborn visit at your nearest MD Family Clinic. When you call the newborn line, you’ll be connected right away to a phone agent who can assist you. Your baby’s first appointment is scheduled 24-48 hours after leaving the hospital or birthing center.

The first head-to-toe health check for your newborn

During your newborn visit, MD Family will perform a complete physical examination of your baby, check their developmental milestones, and assess their weight, feeding, sleeping, and voiding (stooling) habits. If you have questions (and what new parent doesn’t?), this visit is an ideal time to ask.

The provider will also check your hospital or birthing center discharge papers to make sure all necessary screenings and vaccines are complete (including a hearing test, newborn screening/PKU, and hepatitis B vaccine) and discuss upcoming appointments and vaccines with you.

Steps we take to keep your baby safe and healthy

All newborn visits at MD Family Clinic are scheduled first thing in the morning or first thing in the afternoon to minimize exposure to other children. Your baby will go directly to an exam room upon arrival if one is available. Please remember to bring your hospital or birthing center discharge papers, driver’s license, and insurance card with you.

Before you leave, our staff will schedule the next set of appointments to ensure your baby’s milestones continue to be met and help you navigate the intricate world of newborn care.
