Q&A with Dr. Madukaife
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
The Lion King
What is your favorite children's book?
"'Eze Goes to School' by Onuora Nzekwu and Michael Crowder — I read it growing up in Nigeria, and its message about determination in pursuing an education always stuck with me. That same drive is part of what carried me through medical training, and it's something I love encouraging in the kids and families I care for."
What was your favorite childhood toy?
Growing up in Nigeria, I loved LEGOs for building and creating, along with Ludo and Whot — card and board games we'd play for hours with family and friends. Looking back, I think they taught me patience, strategy, and how to have fun with the people around me."
Who is your greatest inspiration?
"My greatest inspiration is my parents. My father instilled in me the value of hard work, discipline, and determination — lessons that carried me from my childhood in Nigeria through medical school and residency. My mother taught me the importance of gratitude and staying thankful, no matter the circumstances. Together, they raised me with a deep sense of humility, and that combination — work ethic paired with gratitude and humility — has shaped both who I am and how I care for my patients today."
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
"Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends, watching movies, traveling, and cooking. I'm also hoping to finally learn to swim — I love the water, but I've never quite gotten past a fear of it, so that's on my list!"
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My background in Family Medicine has given me a deep appreciation for caring for patients at every stage of life, from newborns to older adults. I genuinely enjoy working with both children and adults, and I love how each age group brings unique needs and opportunities to make a difference. What I find especially rewarding about pediatrics is the opportunity to support children as they grow and develop, while also building relationships with their parents and families. My Family Medicine training taught me to look at the whole person and understand how family, environment, and overall health are connected. I hope to bring that same holistic, family-centered approach to pediatrics, building trusting relationships with families and helping children establish a healthy foundation for life.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
"What sets me apart is the genuine connection I build with patients of every age, from newborns to grandparents — and everyone in between. My background spans clinical experience across three continents, which has given me a deep appreciation for meeting children and families exactly where they are, culturally, emotionally, and practically. I have a particular interest in chronic disease management and preventive care, especially the role early habits play in a child's lifelong health. I believe the best outcomes come from families feeling like true partners in their child's care, not just recipients of instructions. I build trust by listening first, explaining things clearly and without jargon, and making sure every visit leaves a family feeling heard, informed, and confident in the plan we've built together."
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Yes. I strive to provide compassionate, individualized care for children with special needs by adapting my communication and approach to each child's needs. I work closely with parents and caregivers, take the time to understand each child's baseline and concerns, and coordinate with appropriate specialists and other members of the care team when additional support is needed.
